Friday 12th July saw the second Humber School Games event which saw around 1500 athletes compete across 11 separate sports. Hymers College and Costello Stadium, Hull were the two venues used to host the event and both venues provided excellent surroundings for what was a superb and hard fought day of competition from schools across the Humber.

The day started with an opening ceremony to welcome the teams to the event and the audience was treated to performance by two local schools, Kelvin Hall and Wolfreton who performed a street dance piece and some Irish dancing respectively and the games were officially opened by British long jumper Chris Kirk.

Following the opening ceremony the sports competitions all got underway and all competitors did very well to give their all with the sun shining and the temperature rising. Success was seen from across the Humber however Hull and East Riding schools did particular well claiming top sport in many of the sports.

The day was supported by around 150 young leaders from local schools, colleges and universities who all gave up their time to ensure the event was delivered to a very high standard.

Gary Sainty – Partnership Engagement Manager at the Humber Sports Partnership said “it is great to see so many young people taking part in sport and the smile on their faces is evident that they are enjoying the event. We have seen some exceptional talent on display throughout the competitions and we hope that they continue to become the next sporting superstar. This event has only come together through hard work which is a credit those involved including the Humber Sports Partnership, School Games Organisers, PE Staff, National Governing Bodies and the volunteers involved from local clubs.”

The Humber School Games will take place again throughout the next academic year; for anyone who would like more information or would like to be involved please contact the Humber Sport Partnership on 01482 387491.
