On Friday the 11th July, six Y7, six Y8 and three Y9 pupils went to Hymers’ College for the Humber School Games to take part in the ‘level 3’ orienteering final. The event started with a big opening ceremony which was hosted by Mark White. There were two dance acts to entertain the large crowd and GB Olympic Badminton player, Anthony Clarke, gave an inspirational opening speech.

The Y7 team got off to a great start with Sophie Reid and Charlotte Morrell Finishing in 13 minutes 2 seconds to take first place by an incredible three minutes. Next up were Molly Tongeman and Caitlin Poole, finishing in 16 minutes 31 seconds and second place overall. Our third pair, Maddie Dale and Olivia Robertson, finished in 16th place and this meant that the Y7 team were the champions with 284 points.

In Y8 Evie Moy and Francis Ellerington completed a longer course in 17minutes and 43 seconds finishing in 12th place. Katie Brennan and Isabel Peat finished in just under twenty minutes to take 15th. Finally Jade Norton and Katelyn Anthony finished in 24 minutes and 44 seconds (20th place) meaning that Y8 finished one place from the podium.

The Y9 competitors faced the longest, most complicated course and ran as individuals. Our first runner, Lynsey Stevens came 14th in 19 minutes and 16 seconds. Next was Becky Briggs who finished just over a minute faster. Finally Holly Bentham raced round in 18 minutes meaning that the team finished in 6th overall.

All fifteen Longcroft pupils did really well in very hot conditions that saw some competitors take more than an hour to complete the various courses laid out by HALO (Hull and Lincoln Orienteering: Monday ‘Club-night’, Longcroft 6.30pm).
